Divorce

You must apply to your local district court if you want to get divorced. You can submit either an individual or a joint application.

The district court might require you to attach a Divorce population registration certificate to your application.

Have you already been granted a divorce in Sweden?

When the district court has reached a decision on your divorce, and its decision has become final, the district court will inform the Swedish Tax Agency of it. You don’t need to contact the Swedish Tax Agency when you have been granted a divorce in Sweden

Have you been granted a divorce in a country other than Sweden?

The Swedish Tax Agency will not normally be informed of your divorce automatically if it was granted in a country other than Sweden. You therefore need to inform the Swedish Tax Agency that you are divorced. You can do this by sending us a letter, or by visiting a Swedish state service centre in person.

You need to provide the following information:

If possible, please attach a copy of your divorce certificate to your letter. We will contact you if we need any additional information. When the Swedish Tax Agency has reached a decision, we will inform you of this.
